Recover a deleted songbook

10/2/2016

This topic describes how to recover deleted songbooks, or songbooks that are hidden.
Most of the time, all your songs are there, simply they are not displayed.
Let's see how to show them again, in a few clicks.

Solution 1 - The songbook is excluded from the search, and hidden

One reason why you don't see your songbook can simply be because it is marked as "hidden".
Make sure that the option “Hide songbooks excluded from the search” is selected.
Right-click on the list of songbooks and select “Show songbooks excluded from the search”:

Solution 2 - The songbooks are there, but all/most songs are gone

The reason is probably that your songbook search mode is set to one of the following options:
Picture
Simply select the "Title and lyrics" search option, and all your songs will be instantly there again.

Solution 3 - Recover the deleted songbook

VideoPsalm stores songbooks into individual files.
When you delete a songbook via the "Delete" button in VideoPsalm, you can get it back easily.

To delete a songbook, select it, then press the "Delete songbook" button and confirm with "OK":
Picture
Let's say that you deleted a songbook, for example your “Big Song Collection”:
Picture
When you delete a songbook, VideoPsalm renames it with a .ignore file extension.
The next time when you start VideoPsalm, this songbook will not be loaded.

To get a deleted songbook back:

1. Open the VideoPsalm options and navigate to the folder where VideoPsalm stores its documents:
Picture
The usual location is:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\VideoPsalm

VideoPsalm stores the songbooks in the "Songbooks" sub-folder:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\VideoPsalm\Songbooks

If your songbook was called "Big Song Collection.vpc", after deletion it will be called "Big Song Collection.vpc.ignore".

2. Rename the songbook file by removing the ".ignore" file extension.

If you don't see file extensions, tell the Windows File Explorer to display them.
By default, Windows hides the file extensions.
To complete the recover process, tell Windows to show the file extensions, via the Windows File Explorer options:
Picture

3. Restart VideoPsalm and see that your songbook is back.

Solution 4 - The songbook is nowhere to be found

Other places to look for your lost songbooks are :
Picture
Look into the Windows Recycle Bin
Somebody may have inadvertently moved your songbook into the Windows Recycle bin.
This is easy to recover.
Picture
Find a misplaced songbook/file
Somebody may have unknowingly moved your songbook into another folder.
  • Use the Windows File Explorer and search for files with the .vpc file extension.
  • Look also for files with the .json extension.
Picture
Get it from a VideoPsalm backup
Someone in your team may posess a VideoPsalm backup done in the short past.
Get the songbook back from the backup.
The backup is a zip file, from where you can extract a single songbook.
Or you can make a full restore.

From your past agenda files
Last, but not least, your agenda files may contain a whole bunch of your songs.
To recover the lost songs, reopen your past agenda files.
VideoPsalm will rebuild your missing songbook, at least the songs from it contained in the agendas.

Three methods to display a background/logo between two songs

7/14/2016

Here are three ways to display an image, logo or video between two songs.
Each method has its advantages, and demonstrates some of VideoPsalm functionalities.

Method 1
Display the church logo after each song

This method produces a result very quickly but requires mastering the VideoPsalm cascading style mechanism.
It is the recommended method if you don't need different backgrounds between two songs in the same agenda.

First, some explanations:

When VideoPsalm displays a song verse, its background originates from one of several levels, depending on what you
 have set:
  • From verse: it is the highest/primary level.
  • From the song
  • From the songbook
  • From the “Songbooks”
  • From the “Base”
Picture
For example, if you assign a “Flower” image to a song, all the song verses will be displayed with this image (Flower), except maybe the verses that have a specific image (Butterfly).

This cascading style mechanism applies to all style attributes (font, alignment, margins, transitions, etc.).
Therefore, before you modify a style attribute, always double-check the level at which you perform this operation.

The level is indicated at the top left, where you can also select it:
Picture
Tip  When you click on certain items, the style level gets automatically synchronized.
For example, when you click a song verse, the style level is automatically positioned on "Verse".
This happens similarly when you click the “Songbooks” or “Bibles” buttons, etc.

In conjunction to the cascading styles, we will use the sequence feature between two songs:
Picture
By default, VideoPsalm proposes to “Switch-off then continue”.
This means that between two songs, VideoPsalm will display a slide corresponding to the “Base” style, which is black by default (the moon).
It is this level, “Base”, that we will use here.

To summarize the method 1:

1. Click the "Songbooks" button:
Picture
This has the effect to set the style level to “Songbooks”.

2. Set a “Black”
 color to this style level:
Picture
If black is already selected, select red first (for example), then select black again.
This will ensure that black is set at this level.
All verses of all songs of all songbooks will get displayed with a black background, unless the background is redefined at a higher level:
Picture
If you prefer, assign a background image to the songbooks, instead of a black color.
The key is to associate some background at the "Songbooks" level.
If you skip this step, the songs will be displayed with the logo in the background, and this is not what you necessarily want.

3. Select the “Base” style level:
Picture
4. Select a background image to assign at the “Base” level
For example, the church logo:
Picture
As this image is assigned to the “Base” style level, it will be displayed between two songs (while the moon is active):
Picture
The song verses, meanwhile, will be displayed with a black background or the image that you assigned to “Songbooks”.

5. Save your changes:

Method 2
Build a songbook of “image backgrounds”
to insert between two songs

This method requires preparation work once, but enables you to easily vary the background image within an agenda.

Create one song for each background images that you need.
Give a meaningful name to each song, so you can easily identify the image you have associated with it.

1. Create a new songbook:
Picture
2. Name the songbook “Images” (for example):
Picture
3. Uncheck the "Include this songbook in the song search" (see # 2 above).
This will prevent the search for songs to present you songs that are actually images.

4. Add a song to this songbook:
Picture
5. Give a meaningful name to this song:
Picture
6. Enter a single verse, empty, containing a single space.

7. Assign an image to chant:
a) Click on the song to select the “Song” style level.
b) Select the image in the image gallery.

8. Create as many “Image” songs as there are images to be inserted between songs.

9. Save your changes.
Now you have a songbook of “Image” songs that you can insert between real songs in your agenda.
This operation only needs to be done once.

10. Each Sunday, build your agenda
like usual, with songs and Bible verses, etc.

11. interleave an “Image” song between each agenda song or Bible verses.

12. Set the sequence between songs to “Continue with the next item”:
Picture
To set the sequence for multiple agenda songs at once, select them, then adjust their sequence via the context menu.

14. Try your agenda: It works!

Method 3
Use slide show images

This is the easiest method: simply add a slideshow image between each song.

Then, as for method 2, adjust the sequence between songs to “Continue with the next item”.

Tip  If you plan on using this method most often, it is advised to adjust the default sequence value between agenda items.
You'll find this option here:
Picture
That's it for the third method.

How to display bilingual songs

6/13/2016

Lets say that we need to display two songs, each one bilingually in English and Spanish.

The songbook called “English songs” contains the two English songs (along with other English songs).

The songbook called "Spanish songs" contains the two Spanish songs (along with other Spanish songs).

Steps to display both songs bilingually:
1. Add both English songs (called E1 and E2) and both Spanish songs (called S1 and S2) to the agenda.

2. In the agenda, arrange the song order as follows: E1, S1, E2, S2
This will display the English lyrics on top of the Spanish lyrics.
To have Spanish on top of English, use the following song order: S1, E1, S2, E2

3. Link the first song to the second, and the third song to the fourth:
Picture
4. Start the presentation, for example by pressing “F5”.
VideoPsalm will display the first verse of song E1 together with the first verse of song S1.
Picture
You may need to adjust the number of verses for songs E1 and S1, so that the lyrics correspond.
To do this, simply insert some blank lines at the right place.
It is possible to add an empty song verse where necessary by adding a blank (a space) in a line followed by a blank line.

To test this, download the corresponding agenda here.
