How to automatically loop through slides

9/19/2013

Most of the time, you will want to tell VideoPsalm exactly when to advance to the next slide. It could be when your people start singing a song, or when they advance to the next song verse, etc.

At other times, for example during the announcements, you may want VideoPsalm to loop regularly through all announcement slides, at a fixed time interval.

Another scenario would be to loop through an image slideshow at regular time intervals, again without you having to manually press the “Down” key.

Lets describe how to configure the first scenario.

1. looping through all slides of a song or a Bible verse list:

The example that follows shows how to display announcements in a loop.
The same example is applicable to song verses or Bible verses.

a) Let's create an “announcement” song that has three slides, for example:

Verse 1
Wednesday 25. September

20:00 Prayer meeting
Description
Location
etc.

Verse 2
Saturday 28. September

19:00 Youth group
Description
Location
etc.

Verse 3
Sunday 29. September

10:00 Morning service
Description
Location
etc.

Trick  To insert a blank line in a slide, simply add a blank character (a space) at the start of the line.
You can see that there is a blank line in each slide, after the date line (the title).

Note  It is a good idea to store all your “Announcement” songs in an “Announcement” songbook, where you will store all your announcements. Announcements are nothing else than “songs” that contain announcements instead of lyrics.
This way, you can chose a specific format for all your announcements, certainly different from the one you have for your songs.

  • How to create a new song or a new songbook

b) Add the announcement “song” to the agenda
This is an important step: Once a song (or any other item for this purpose) is into the agenda, it gets some enhanced functionality, like for example the possibility to automatically loop through slides.

c) Select the “Loop” progress mode, either via the drop-down, or via the context menu (right-click on the announcement):
Picture
Select the progress mode via the drop-down...
Picture
...or via a right-click on the announcement.
Right-clicking on the agenda item gets you the bonus option to set the time interval between two slides.

Available options:
  • The default option is to “Advance manually” through the slides: You chose when to advance to the next slide, either by clicking on the next slide, or by pressing the “Down” key on your keyboard.

Note  VideoPsalm is compatible with remote presenter devices, and uses the standard keyboard shortcuts that you are used to in other presentation software, like Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • The “Play to end” option enables to automatically advance through the slides of a song or Bible verses once only. This auto-advance mode stops when the presentation reaches the last slide.

  • The “Loop” option will restart indefinitely to the first slide once the last slide has been displayed. To stop the sequence, simply press the “Down” key on the last slide. This will stop the loop sequence. Another way to stop the loop is to select another song in the agenda or in the songbook list.

2. Looping through images of a slide show

VideoPsalm can easily display a picture slideshow, from within the agenda.

To tell VideoPsalm to loop through your slideshow images, select them all with the mouse (click on the first image, then Shift+click on the last image) and assign them either the “Loop” or “Play to end” option, as a whole, via the context menu that you get when you right-click on them:

Hello. I am having trouble trying through loop through a set of images. I followed the instructions "How to automatically loop through Slides"->"2. Looping through images of a slideshow." However, even though I set all the images to Loop, VideoPsalm stops when it gets to the last image. I have an agenda of five images that I want to continuously loop through. Yet, VideoPsalm just goes through the images one time then stops. It is acting like I chose "Play to End" instead of Loop. What do I do? Thank you.

Hi Arlen,

Thank you for your feedback.

Which VideoPsalm version do you use?
I just checked it with 1.24 (available shortly), and the slideshow loops like expected.
It should also work with 1.16 through 1.23 (it was broken in 1.15).

Hi Dimetric,

Thank you for informing me about the malfunction while looping a slideshow.
This bug is corrected but alas the fix is not publicly available yet, as the next release (1.15) is almost ready.

Thanks,
Marc

I note that we are now using 1.16 but the bug still seems to be there

Hi Bill,

Actually, it was another bug.

The bug that you are experiencing now will be corrected in VideoPsalm 1.17 only.

In VideoPsalm 1.16, to circumvent the bug, add an announcement before the first slideshow image, The announcement need only contain a single slide.
The bug happens when the slideshow images are at the very start of the agenda.

VideoPsalm 1.17
The main new features of VideoPsalm 1.17 will be:

Support for (directly from the agenda):
- PDF
- Word
- LibreOffice Write and Calc
- Excel
- html
- live web sites (an internet connection is required)
- YouTube video (an internet connection is required)
- Standalone audio files with backgrounds

It will be possible to associate such files to a song in a permanent manner, and display them instead or along of the song lyrics, while being able to search for songs by their lyrics.

It won't be necessary to install a PDF reader, or Word, Excel, LibreOffice, etc. to display such content (except for already supported PowerPoints, for which Microsoft PowerPoint 2003+ is required).

Hopefully it will have a "Stage view" feature, as well as numerous other improvements.

There is no planed release date though, hopefully in early 2017.

I am struggling with the looping of images (announcements)
I am not sure how to circumvent the bug you mentioned. How do you add an announcement before the first image?
I am not using a powerpoint slideshow, I added each image individually and set the timer accordingly.
Thanks in advance.

Hello;
How sync the verse´s songs (presentation) with a music player?
Let me explain:
1.- I select a song from the songbook.
2.- I use a music player (Winamp or another)
Some verses have "x" or "y" secs (length), interludes has "z" secs.
(Sorry for the Bad English)

Hello Rafael,

Audio synchronization is not available at the moment, sorry.
I added your suggestion to the todo list.

With VideoPsalm's next version (1.15, due soon), it will be possible to associate an audio file to a song.

The audio will start automatically when the lyrics are displayed, after pressing the "Down" key again, or using the "Play audio" button in the VideoPsalm media player control.

The operator needs to press the "Down" key again when necessary to advance to the next slide while the audio plays.
I think that this feature goes into the direction of what you are requesting.

I am new to VideoPsalm an delighted to be learning it. I was able to get my announcements to look at the beginning of the service but have to go back to the agenda to advance to the next item. I thought I read that it should advance with the press of the down button.

Hi Ellen,

To interrupt a looping item, press the "E" key (E for End), then press "Down" to move to the next item.
Alternatively you can use the "+" key to jump to the next agenda item.
This works while the slide panel has the focus.
The same applies for the "Down" or "Page down" keys, which move to the next slide.

Does it work for you?

If not, please use the contact form (http://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/contact.html) where we can exchange email securely.

I am learning this program and my church does our announcements via a power point presentation. I set it to run during the beginning of service and select it to loop. When it loops, video psalm seems to just stop and restart the presentation instead of actually looping. So at the last slide, it shows, then we get a blank or black screen, and then it restarts the slide show.

Am I doing something wrong in the setup or is this normal? And is there a way to get it to actually loop? Like maybe video psalm can just use the power point the way it's formatted and loop if the power point was created to loop?

Hi Jason,

By default, a PowerPoint presentation added to a VideoPsalm agenda will be set to advance manually.

To loop the presentation, select "Loop", instead of "Advance manually", in the presentation agenda options.

Make sure that your presentation is not set to loop from within PowerPoint. Simply declare all your slides as regular slides (with or without transitions), or else the presentation may not restart.

Hi a user originally posted that multiple images is not looping even according to your instructions. You said you would have it fixed in the 1.15 update. I have now downloaded the 1.16 Update and it is still not fixed.
Could you please show me what I am doing wrong. Thank you, God bless

The picture slideshow is cool, but I would like to see support for a looping video slideshow option to be implemented. You can make a once-through video slideshow, but I would like to be able to "fire and forget" a loop of a few welcome videos before church services. Also, an option that would automatically advance a video slideshow when each video reaches the end of its duration would be phenomenal.

Unless I am misunderstanding exactly what you are asking, you should be able to do this with VideoPsalm. I had a couple motion videos to loop continuously.

Hi Dimetric,

Thank you for your feedback.
It seems that Adam got hit by a bug that happens when the looping videos are the first agenda items (see my answer to him).

VideoPsalm link
4/10/2016 06:44:02 am

Hi Adam,

There is a bug that prevents several consecutive standalone agenda videos (or slideshow images) to loop when they are the top first agenda items.

To circumvent this bug, put an empty song (or announcement) as the top agenda item.
This bug will be (is) corrected in VideoPsalm 1.17.

Here are detailed instructions to loop standalone consecutive videos placed into an agenda. Don't miss the point 3:

1. Add several consecutive standalone videos in an agenda.
2. Click on the first video item in the agenda, to select it.

3. Right-click on the first video item, to popup the context menu.
4. Select the menu "Timer" -> "Interval in seconds", and set the seconds to the exact length of the video (this may require a caculator, hopefully this step will be simplified in a future version).
5. Repeat steps 3 to 4 for each video.

then:
6. Select all videos (click on the first video item, then Shift+click on the last one).
7. Right-click on these video items, to popup the context menu.
8. Select the menu "Timer" -> "Loop", to tell VideoPsalm to loop these videos.

9. In case the video items are the first agenda items (i.e. there is no song or Bible verse before), circumvent the aforementioned bug by placing a top first agenda item containing an empty verse.
An empty song consists in a single verse containing a blank (a space).

Please use the contact form (http://videopsalm.weebly.com/contact.html) to enable safe email exchange between us.
Additionally, emails can have attached documents and can contain images.

Your swift reply is much appreciated. I had already used the timer workaround to time the advancement of video slides, but I'm glad that your team is working on adding a more simplified functionality than manually timing transitions. Thank you for being on top of bug correction as well. Good work everyone!

Hey there, also having the same trouble with video looping. Wanting toeave and have the slideshow play through and not have to think about. Has this been fixed? We have the 1.16 version. Thanks for your help!

Hi Elizabeth,

To circumvent the bug, put any other item, like a song, at the top of the agenda. Any song will do.

Step by step instructions:

1. If you don't have a song with an empty verse, create one now:
http://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/how-to-addedit-songs-and-announcements.html
Note that to circumvent the bug, it is not required that the song be empty.

2. Add this song in the agenda, at the top (first position).

3. Put your videos to loop under this empty song.

4. Set your videos to loop, like described here in the article at the top.

5. For each video, set the timer duration to the exact length of the video. Per default, the timer is set to 5 seconds, which is likely shorter than any of your videos.

Does it work for you?

This is a great programme - clearly a lot of hard work has been put into it, good job! I noticed a while you ago in the forum you mentioned about looking at audio syncing as a possibility in the future? It would be great to be able to manually sync by listening through a song and just clicking on the progress bar where you'd want the slide to change as it plays through, then be able to save that sequence permanently.

Hi Paul,
Yes, sure this would be good to have and is in the list of things to do. However probably not in version 1.17.

The main new features of VideoPsalm 1.17 will be:

Support for (directly from the agenda):

It won't be necessary to install a PDF reader, or Word, Excel, LibreOffice, etc. to display such content (except for PowerPoints, which are already suported).
Hopefully it will have a "Stage view" feature, as well as other improvements.

There is no planed release date though, hopefully before end of 2016.

Greetings, I followed the directions here but I don't seem to be able to loop an image into a "song" of announcements. For example, an agenda that would have:

welcome_image.jpg
announcement slides

The plan would be to have the welcome image show, then go through a number of slides with announcement text. I'm sure I could engineer up a work-around such as making a separate image for each announcement, but wondering if this is generally possible in the program to make it easier for training others less technically inclined?

Sorry, I feel I should clarify the problem as my original post did not say so.

When I put the image first, I can get the image to display and then go to the announcements. I can get the announcements to loop themselves, but not go back to the image. This includes trying a "batch" loop setting as displayed in the second part of the page above.

When I put the announcements first, they will loop themselves without going to the image at all. This includes a "batch" loop as well.

I have a similar question.
I would like to show a picture slideshow with several bible verses in between the pictures. When I set the loop option, it would only go back to the beginning of a set of image stopping at the last bible verse.

This feature is in the list of things to do, however I don't know when it will be implemented.

You can put a blank slide in your announcement 'song' and then set the background image for that slide only to the one for the introduction. However it needs to be done to the right aspect ratio or else it will cut parts of the image

HI folks, please help.
I absolutely love Videopsalm but use multiple powerpoint presentations in my church services. I have a new PC running win10 and since I deleted the trial version of Office 365 and installed a spare copy of Office 2007 that I had, powerpoint keeps crashing.
I've reinstalled videopsalm but it no longer closes a powerpoint from the agenda when I move on to the next item ...it just stays running and i end up with multiple powerpoints running and then I get the huge error box on screen and videopsalm freezes. Any suggestions where I go from here? thanks

Thank you for your feedback about VideoPsalm failing to control PowerPoint.
VideoPsalm 1.26 uses a different way to control PowerPoint.
If it doesn't work for you, please try with VideoPsalm 1.23 and let me know.
