How to control VideoPsalm with a keyboard, without a mouse

3/31/2014

While operating VideoPsalm, you will encounter several workflows where you can gain some precious reaction time by using the keyboard instead of the mouse.

Note
Some of these shortcuts are only working up from version 1.14.

Add songs to the agenda
Adding songs to the agenda is usually the first task that you encounter after starting VideoPsalm.

The following list of shortcuts will help you to get rid of the mouse in most situations.
Most of these shortcuts work similarly for Bible verses.

Swap between “Songbooks” and “Bibles” with Alt+S and Alt+B respectively:
Photo
Jump to the “Search” field with Ctrl+F and directly start typing the title or some lyrics of the song you are looking for:
Photo
Add the selected song to the agenda with Insert, Pause or Alt+A.

If VideoPsalm finds several songs that match the search expression, this is how to select the right song:
  1. Press Tab to focus the songbook panel.
  2. Press the direction keys (Down or Up) until you reach the right song.
  3. Add the selected song to the agenda with Insert, Pause or Alt+A
    or
  4. Immediately present the selected song in the songbook panel (its first slide) with Enter (VideoPsalm 1.14).

To reach the “Search” field again, press Shift+Tab while the songbook panel has the focus or Ctrl+F anytime.

To clear the “Search” field, press Esc (useful when you miss-typed some text in it).

Note about selecting Bible verses
I find it handy to always add whole Bible chapters to the agenda, instead of only the specific verses.
This enables to display adjacent unplanned verses without any overhead.

Agenda shortcuts

Delete an agenda item with Del.

Reorder an agenda item with Ctrl+PageUp or Ctrl+PageDown.

Save an agenda with Ctrl+S.

Open an agenda with Ctrl+O.

Presenting

These shortcuts are compatible with PowerPoint and with most wireless remote presenters.

Start the presentation with F5.
Note that this will restart the presentation at the beginning in case it was already started.

Move to the next slide with:
- the Down key
- the Page-Down key
- a Mouse left-click on the presentation screen*

At the end of a song, move to the next song with:
- the Down key
- the Page-Down key
- a Mouse left-click on the presentation screen*

Move to the previous slide with:
- the Up key
- the Page-Up key.
- a Mouse right-click on the presentation screen*

Break the loop on a song or an announcement with the E key.

Restart a song with the Home key.

While on single screen presentation mode, exit the presentation with the following actions:
- Escape key
- Mouse double-click on presentation screen*
- End key

While the slide panel is focused, which is often the case while presenting:

Jump to the next agenda item with the Plus key.
Jump to the previous agenda item while the slide panel is focused with the Minus key.

* Note
Actions with a * are only available in single screen mode, when you don't have a video-projector or secondary monitor.

We have recently purchased a touchscreen laptop for our Church, and myvideospalm works perfectly, as we just touch the verse or chorus we need

Would it be possible to make one of the "Advance to the Next Slide" shortcut keys to move the focus to the current verse so that it works even if I've clicked somewhere else in VideoPsalm and forgotten to click back onto the current verse? I'd suggest the 'N for Next' key shortcut, because users wouldn't expect to apply in other areas.

The "Ctrl+" shortcut keys to other buttons next to the verses already do this. So I can press "Ctrl+D Ctrl+D N" from anywhere in VideoPsalm to achieve what I want, but of course if I remember to do all of that in the heat of the moment, then I would also remember to click back into the verse!

If you want an example, I sometimes need to change the volume of a backing track while a song is showing and then forget to click back into the verse to give it focus.

Thank you for excellent software!

Hi John,

Thank you for your description of the problem.
This bug will be fixed in VideoPsalm 1.27.
The keyboard keys "Up" and "Down" and the other slide panel shortcuts will keep working after the video or audio players get the focus.
These shortcuts will not operate when other panels have the focus.
Is this OK?

Thank you for your reply. It gives something new, but actually takes away what I am really looking for. The example I gave of adjusting a video or audio player was just the most frequent one. What I am really looking for is a shortcut that puts the focus onto the current verse from anywhere. I appreciate this can't be the up and down arrow keys, because they have a valid function in the other panels, but the current Ctrl+key shortcuts (like Ctrl+D) fit the requirement because their function is only for the slide panel buttons. Looking at the F5 shortcut - that one specifically puts the focus onto the verses panel, with the additional (prime) function of resettting "to the top".

Here are the reasons why I would like a 'universal Next" shortcut key - the equivalant of just clicking the 'next' button next to the verses:

(1) For people using a remote control, so 'next' always displays the next slide. (I appreciate that the user would need to change the key-mapping of remote controls from the default arrow or page-down keys)

(2) When I am streaming using VideoPsalm, so I can use a utility like AutoHotKey to be able to combine a VideoPsalm "Next Slide" with simultaneous changes to other applications such as a scene-change in OBS, regardless of the focus on any windows. For VideoPsalm I can do this now in AutoHotkey by getting it to activate the VideoPsalm Window and then send "Ctrl+D Ctrl+D N". This works even if the last thing I did in VideoPsalm was to edit a lyric, or to click another song or agenda item, and forget to give focus back to the new verse - or not have time to.

So if you do nothing else, at least please don't take away the function of those keys like Ctrl+D to put the focus back onto the current verse from anywhere in VideoPsalm!

In fact "Ctrl+D Ctrl+D" works perfectly to just move the focus without changing the projection in any way, ready for the "Next" to move to the next slide if the song hasn't changed, or to the first slide of a new song selected in the Agenda or Song List. So a single shortcut key to replicate the action of "Ctrl+D Ctrl+D N" would be perfect for remote controllers!
